Somaliland to Open Embassy in Jerusalem
HARGEISA, May 19 (Aragsan) — The Government announced on Tuesday that the country’s embassy in Israel will be located in the city of Jerusalem, these comes after the new Somaliland ambassador to Israel Dr. Mohamed Omar Hagi presented his diplomatic credentials to Israeli President Isaac Herzog on Monday marking the official start of his tour of duty in the asian country.
When the new embassy is officially inaugurated in the coming months, it will mark a historic diplomatic milestone for the Republic of Somaliland as the first African country and the second Muslim Majority nation to have its embassy in Jerusalem.
“I am pleased to announce that the Republic of Somaliland’s embassy will be located in Jerusalem,” said Dr. Mohamed Omar Hagi Mohamoud, Somaliland ambassador to Israel. He described the move as a reflection of growing friendship, mutual respect, and strategic cooperation between the two diplomatic allies.
Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Sa’ar commended the decision of the Government to choose Jerusalem as the location of the embassy.
“The opening of the embassy in Jerusalem will be another significant step in strengthening relations,” Sa’ar said.
The diplomatic development comes months after Israel appointed its first-ever ambassador to Somaliland and announced mutual recognition in December 2025.
